If you want to upgrade to Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

When do I need to upgrade my hard drive?

When the hard drive's free space is less than 10 percent.

When do I need to upgrade my memory?

When you upgrade your operating systen from Windows 95/98 to Windows XP or 2000.
Suggested minimum memory for Windows 95 - 128MB
Suggested minimum memory for Windows 98 - 128MB
Suggested minimum memory for Windows XP - 512MB
Suggested minimum memory for Windows 2000 - 512MB
Suggested minimum memory for Windows Vista - 1GB

You should also consider the CPU and power supply when you upgrade. These are the recomended not the minimum requirements.

Recomended CPU/FSB/Memory for Windows XP - P3/ 500/ 512
Recomended CPU/FSB/Memory for Windows 2000 - P2/ 500 /512
Recomended CPU/FSB/Memory/Power supply for Windows Vista - Pentium Dual Core 3GB/ 1GB / 400 Watt 24pin +4 Power supply
It is not recommended to put Vista on an older computer. It is very hard to find Vista device drivers (sound, video, motherboard) for computers purchased before 2006

Should I upgrade my computer by changing the Motherboard and CPU?

Not if the price of the Motherboard and CPU is more than half of the price of a new system.
