• How do I get to a file on the other computer on our network? Be patient, sometimes the computers are a little slow to react - esp to shared printer commands!
  (example: I want to print out a file that is on the other computer.)
  
  
• How can I change what program opens up my file? This is also where you can change the icon for that file type.
  (example: I want Paint Shop Pro to open .gif files not Windows Explorer)
  
  
• How can I save my address book in Outlook Express?
  (example: I don't want to have to type them all in again if my hard drive goes bad.)
  
  
• Help - I can't move the icons on my desktop.
  (example: I move them and they snap back where they were.)
  
  
• Help - After I moved my computer my cable/DSL won't work.
  (example: It tells me it can't find the modem.)
  
  
• Where is Dialup Networking? - Under MY COMPUTER

• How can I set it so my computer or monitor turns off when not in use?

• The name under the icons doesn't tell me what kind of file it is.

• How do I turn the auto run feature on or off for my CDs?

• My computer is slow - How can I keep of all those programs I am not using from opening up every time I start my computer?
  (example: That little box by my clock is FILLED with icons.)
  
  
• Where is the SCAN DISK and DE FRAG?
  (example: I was told I should run scan disk and defrag my hard drive ever few months.)

If the wrong program is opening your file (for example Windows Explorer opens all .gif files and you want Paint Shop Pro to open them) then you need to change how the .gif files are registered. Once changed, all the files with that extention will now open with the new program you have selected)

1. Select FOLDER OPTIONS from the view menu in any window.
2. Click FILE TYPES tab in the dialogue box.
3. Find your file type in the REGISTERED FILE TYPES box.
4. Highlight the file type.
   • You can now see details about the file you have selected at the botom of this box.
5. Click EDIT button - a new window will open.
6. Find the ACTIONS window - highlight OPEN
7. Click EDIT
8. Click BROWSE - Select the program you want to open your file.
9. Click OK

Now return to File Types Page and you can see that the file will now open with the program you selected. You will notice that you can also change the icon associated with that file type, plus other actions for the file.

If you only want the new program to open a particular file once and go back to the original...

1. Select the file icon you wish to change.
2. Shift/Right Click
3. Select Open with
4. choose the program you want to open the file
   • or Browse if program isn't on the list
5. DO NOT choose always use or it will always use the new program to open that file type same as above.
